Good-bye Spill

Spill has been fun, and I’ve met lots of great people, but I think it’s time for Spill to come to an end. Attendance has been low for the last couple of months. The coffee shop where the reading is held has started scheduling other things on some Tuesday nights. I don’t have the energy to look for a new place or to advertise more to increase attendance. I’m thinking maybe we could have a Tuesday night social event at Tir Na Nog, and maybe later I could try to set up a once-a-month reading somewhere.

If you didn’t make it to the August 10 reading, don’t worry – you didn’t miss anything. When I got there the shop was dark. A nice young lady who had attended Spill once before (Jaz?) was sitting outside. She found out that they were closed for the evening because someone associated with the shop had died. I wouldn’t have wanted to work either if I were them. Anyway, apparently several people showed up and were told of the situation. I don’t know who came before I got there, but Alissa is back from England and was ready to read, and Jason had typed up some new poems. Plus the young lady Jaz was planning to read something.

Oh, well, there’s another Tuesday just one week away. Join us if you can.

Spill continues to have an intimate feeling. There were four readers, two of them new to Spill. The final reader was Sean Ingram, a published author. He reacted to things which were said by other readers, which is one of the cool things that tends to happen at Spill. The discussions afterwards were, as always, an important part of the Spill experience, with topics triggered by items read.

The majority of the people at the event were there for the first time, and I hope they will become regulars. Some of the current regulars weren’t able to make it this week, but we hope to see them soon.

The Morning Times is a great venue. The staff is supportive and the atmosphere is artsy. Thanks, Morning Times!

Tuesday night downtown fun

Spill is back on!

Spill has found a new home, plus a new day and time. The Morning Times has generously offered to let us hold the event in their upstairs room. The day has been changed to Tuesday night, and we’ll be starting a half hour earlier, at 8, because Morning Times closes at 10. They are located at 10 E. Hargett St. in downtown Raleigh.

Next Tuesday, June 22, a different group will be hosting a reading at Morning Times. They usually have readings once a month or so on a Saturday, but this is a special event for them. The following week, June 29, Spill will be on. I plan to be there on June 22. Join me, it’s a cool space and there will be poetry. READING SUSPENDED!

The Third Place will start closing at 7 every night starting June 8. That means no more readings. One of the employees generously offered to stay late on Thursdays at no pay so that we could have the reading, but it doesn’t feel right to me to do that. I plan to find another place to have the reading and hope to keep the night and time the same. I’ll post here as soon as I figure anything out. I’m open to suggestions.
